As part of the national screening programme all women between 25 and 64 years of age are advised to have regular smear tests. Between the ages of 24 and 50 you are advised to have the test at least every 3 years. If you are over 50 years of age the test can be performed every 5 years.
Cervical screening is not a test for cancer. It is a method of preventing cancer by detecting and treating early abnormalities which, if left untreated, could lead to cancer in a woman’s cervix (the neck of the womb).
At Deptford Medical Centre the Practice Nurse and the female Doctor performs cervical smear tests. Please book an appointment with the nurse or doctor, specifying that it is for a smear test when you are due yours.
